A brief history of Victoria Mills

 

1873

Henry Mason built Victoria Works to manufacture worsted coatings and dress goods. One of four significant mills in Bradford (Salts, Lister’s, Drummonds and Victoria Works). Fully integrated – the wool arrived on the top floor and all the processes took place on site from wool to finished cloth. The weaving shed was almost two acres in size. The produce was exported worldwide.

1888

”New” Mill was built.  This was a sign that business was booming! At the same time Old Mill was enlarged by carefully adding another floor and changing the roof style from pitched to “Northern Lights”

1930

Henry Mason now lived at Bankfield House (now the Ramada Bankfield Hotel) near Cottingley. He arrived daily in a carriage drawn by four white horses and personally greeted his workers who held him in high regard.

1958

By this date Solomon Jerome had commenced trading as a cloth merchant in 1930 and laid the foundations for the Jerome Group.  It was during this year that Jerome’s acquired the Mills still producing high quality worsted cloth.
 

2003

Newmason Properties acquire Victoria Mills and embark on a UK wide tour of developments which combine conversion of historic buildings and quality new-build. The conversion of Victoria Mills is a once in a lifetime opportunity which requires respect and careful thought and inspiration is sought from the best of the rest!
 

2004

Planning permission is granted for a 21st Century ‘village style development’ to challenge the vision of Sir Titus Salt himself! Work commences using the best of local craftsmen and materials
 

2005

The first of many awards received including the RICS Award for Building Conservation and the ResiProps Award for Best Mill Conversion
 

2006

150 apartments and 200+ residents now living in Victoria Mills and Saltaire Facilities Management taking control of managing and developing a community.
 

2007

Sees the arrival of a Beauty Mill, a Gym, a Shop, a multi storey car park and car spa, tennis court and an outdoor chess. 270 apartments now occupied with over 350 residents of all ages and mix.
 

2008

A restaurant opens offering catering for all residents, the gardens are landscaped and riverside walks are created. There are now 440 apartments with 600+ residents – some renting and many owners. Training and employment now provided for 20+ permanent jobs relating to the Victoria Mills community, which has now been given a new lease of life.
